VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
CAREER FAQs

What is a veterinary technician?
A veterinary technician or veterinary technologist is a person trained to assist veterinarians in the care of animals. Veterinary technicians perform a variety of clinical procedures on animals, including conducting physical exams and assisting in surgeries.

What’s the difference between a Vet Tech and Vet Assistant?

Veterinary technicians are given more extensive training, are able to perform more clinical procedures, and have a higher salary than a veterinary assistant.

What does it mean to be an “accredited” program?
Accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) represents the highest standard of achievement for veterinary technician education in the United States. Institutions that earn this accreditation confirm their commitment to quality and continuous improvement through a rigorous and comprehensive peer review.  Such institutions must meet high standards for faculty, curriculum, and facilities.

Graduates of AVMA-accredited programs are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam, which is required in most states to become a credentialed veterinary technician.

Finally, graduating from an accredited program tells employers that you have met the education standards of your program and the AVMA professional community as an educated veterinary technician.

Where do veterinary technicians work?
Veterinary technicians often work for animal clinics, shelters, research facilities, government agencies.  A select few work in zoos and aquariums.

How long will it take to graduate?
Most veterinary technician programs can be completed in 24 months or less. Most programs award associate degrees.
